“Nobody told us they needed to be commissioned!”

“Nobody told us they needed to be commissioned!”

Far too often, we come across heat networks that were handed over without proper HIU commissioning or hydraulic balancing.

And let’s be honest — this is the worst possible start for any network.

Why does it matter?

Because commissioning isn’t just a box-ticking exercise. It’s the foundation for performance, efficiency, and customer satisfaction. When HIUs aren’t commissioned properly, you’re essentially rolling the dice on everything from flow rates to temperatures to billing accuracy.

An unbalanced network? That’s a fast track to overheating, underheating, poor delta T, and high return temps. That inefficiency has a ripple effect across the entire network.

Proper commissioning and balancing mean:

✅ Lower return temperatures
✅ Improved system efficiency
✅ Reduced operating costs
✅ Happier residents
✅ Protecting your investment

Cutting corners at handover might save time (and 💰) upfront, but it costs much more in call-outs, complaints, and wasted energy down the line.

If we want heat networks to be the sustainable solution they’re meant to be, we’ve got to start with the basics — and do them right.

Let’s stop handing over uncommissioned systems. It’s time to raise the bar, or climb over it!
